Auto insurance for Chicago drivers
Driving in the city is different, and so is insuring a car here. We explain what drives Chicago premiums, what coverage makes sense for city parking and traffic, and how to get Illinois-compliant coverage at a fair price.
Why Chicago premiums are different
Insurance prices reflect the risk of claims where a car is kept. Premiums are generally higher in the city than in downstate Illinois for a few reasons.
Traffic density
More cars, pedestrians, cyclists and intersections mean more chances for collisions, even minor ones.
Theft & vandalism
Higher theft, break-in and vandalism rates affect comprehensive coverage costs, especially for street-parked cars.
Uninsured drivers
A larger share of uninsured drivers raises the cost of uninsured motorist claims, and the value of carrying strong UM limits.
Your garaging ZIP
Rates are based on where the car is kept overnight, so prices can differ from one Chicago neighborhood to the next.
Report where your car is really kept
Your garaging ZIP code is where the vehicle is parked most nights. It is one of the biggest factors in a Chicago premium, and it must be accurate.
Listing a suburban or out-of-state address for a car that actually lives in the city can create serious problems: an insurer may adjust your premium, deny a claim or cancel the policy if it finds the information was wrong. If you move, or your car's overnight location changes, tell us so we can update the policy.
Ways Chicago drivers manage cost
- Compare carriers. Each one rates city ZIP codes differently.
- Choose a deductible you can comfortably afford.
- Ask about anti-theft device, paid-in-full, paperless and multi-car discounts.
- Keep continuous coverage. Gaps generally raise future prices.
- Keep your record clean. Hand-held phone use while driving is illegal in Illinois.
The city sticker is not insurance
Chicago residents must buy a City of Chicago vehicle sticker (the wheel tax license) for vehicles registered to a city address. It is a city tax, not insurance, and it does not prove coverage. You still need an active Illinois auto policy and proof of insurance in the car.
Fees on Illinois policies
Illinois auto policies itemize a Police Training Fee and a Theft Prevention Fee. We show every fee on your proposal before you sign, so there are no surprises.
Coverage worth a look in the city
Comprehensive for theft and vandalism, uninsured motorist limits above the minimum, and rental reimbursement if you rely on your car daily. See every coverage explained.
Driving for Uber, Lyft or delivery apps in Chicago
Rideshare driving in Illinois is governed by the Transportation Network Providers Act, which sets insurance requirements for each phase of a trip. Most personal auto policies exclude rideshare and delivery use, which can leave a gap while the app is on and you are waiting for a request.
The City of Chicago also regulates transportation network providers under Municipal Code chapter 9-115, and sets its own requirements for drivers. Check with your platform and the city about driver requirements; we can help with the insurance part.
Read the rideshare guideTell your insurer if you drive for an app. Using your car for rideshare or delivery without disclosing it can lead to a denied claim. A rideshare endorsement, where available, is designed to close that gap.
What to do after a crash in the city
Stay calm and work through these steps. Your safety comes first.
Get safe and call for help
Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Turn on your hazards and, if you can do so safely, move out of traffic. Crashes involving injury or death must be reported to police.
Document everything
Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance and plate information. Photograph the vehicles, street, signs and any damage. Note witnesses and the police report number.
Report it on time
Notify your insurer promptly. File an IDOT crash report within 10 days if anyone was hurt or property damage exceeds $1,500 ($500 if any driver was uninsured).
Hit by an uninsured driver, or by a driver who left the scene? Your uninsured motorist coverage may apply, including if you were walking or biking. Tell your insurer as soon as possible. Illinois crash reporting rules.
Serving Chicago and the suburbs
We help drivers across the city and the surrounding area, and anywhere in Illinois. You can work with us online, by phone, or through a partner office.
Chicago neighborhoods
Downtown and the Loop, the North Side, Northwest Side, West Side, South Side and Southwest Side. Whether you park in a garage, a lot or on the street, we will quote based on where your car really stays.
Suburbs & collar counties
Suburban Cook County and the surrounding DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane and McHenry counties, plus drivers elsewhere in Illinois. Commuting into the city? Tell us, since how you use the car affects your rate.
Quotes are estimates based on the information you provide and are finalized only when an insurance company underwrites your application. Coverage is not in force until the carrier binds the policy and we confirm it to you.
